Run, run, run…then do yoga

Yoga for RunnersSpring foot races are right around the corner. Maybe you’ve already done one or two, but are preparing for a big one in the next month or two.

Whatever your goals may be this season, crosstraining should be a part of your regimen. And yoga is a great way to crosstrain as it blends strength exercises with stretching and core work. Yoga’s ultimate strength for athletes lies in its ability to deepen the mind-body connection.

Think about your training. Think about what your body goes through, how hard it works to get to that finish line. Can you feel when the body is working too hard? Can you feel when it can work harder?

In yoga, we like to say, pay attention to the body so you can hear it whisper. Then you don’t have to wait until the body screams. This means, connecting the body with the mind will give you more awareness about what kind of impact training is having on your body. You’ll be able to notice easier when the body needs a rest, or if it is OK to push a little harder, go that extra mile, pick up the pace.

In yoga, we train our minds to listen to our bodies. Mind over matter, right?

So, get on the mat and find that deeper connection. Your body will respond and thank you.
